SLS to make third launch attempt
NASA’s Artemis 1 mission is now scheduled to make its third liftoff attempt on Sept. 27, the space agency has announced. The rocket is made up of the six-person Orion capsule perched atop the 30-story Space Launch System (SLS) and was initially scheduled to embark on its maiden voyage to the moon and back on Aug. 29. But the mission was scrubbed because engineers were unable to cool one of the rocket's four core stage RS-25 engines down to a safe temperature in time for liftoff. The agency announced that it had fixed the problem, which it blamed on a faulty temperature sensor. Then, during the rocket’s second attempt, an alarm sounded as the craft was being loaded with its supercooled liquid hydrogen fuel, alerting engineers to a gap in the seal of one of the rocket's engines. Engineers tried and failed to plug the leak three times, NASA said. The agency has outlined a new date for the fueling demonstration: Sept. 21. If all goes well, the SLS will launch during a 70-minute window that opens Sept. 27 at 11:37 AM EDT. However, for all the reasons, the agency has a backup launch date on Oct. 2. Making cargo planes lethal
The US Air Force is developing new ways to use its aircraft in order to prepare for a war against a capable opponent, including repurposing cargo planes and tankers for other missions. Air Force Special Operations Command, headquartered at Hurlburt Field, Fla., has been working to enable AFSOC's workhorse cargo plane, the MC-130J, to drop pallets of long-range cruise missiles. "I think an adversary has to take a lot different look at the region when it comes to where can we project power from," Lt. Gen. Jim Slife, the head of AFSOC, said at an Air & Space Forces Association event on September 7. It can also be adopted by allies and partners. "The beauty is this capability doesn't require any aircraft modifications and it doesn't require any special crew training," Slife said. "So it's really easily exportable." The Air Force has been contemplating how to deploy more firepower with its existing fleet for nearly a decade. The idea has advanced rapidly over the past two years in an initiative known as Rapid Dragon, involving MC-130Js and other airlifters. (Source: Business Insider via Yahoo News, 09/13/22) Previous

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said after the scrub that a new attempt to launch the Artemis I mission could be delayed until mid October, depending on whether the rocket needs to be rolled back to its assembly building for repairs. It is the second time this week that NASA had to scrub a planned launch of SLS at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. (Sources: multiple, including Washington Post, NPR, 09/03/22) Previous
