Two die in plane crash

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Two people died when a small plane crashed two miles from Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, federal officials said. The single-engine Cessna 182 crashed Tuesday night in a wooded area, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Bay County Sheriff’s officials said the plane was approaching the airport around 7 p.m. when it disappeared from radar. "The plane was flying originally from Michigan and had stopped at McMinnville, Tenn., before taking off for the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport," BCSO said in a release. Deputies identify the victims as husband and wife Donald and Diane Slattery. Airport gets federal grant

Two transportation agencies in Mobile, Ala., are getting a combine $100 million in federal grant money to support several projects, including construction of the new airport terminal at the Mobile Aeroplex. The Mobile Airport Authority will get $62 million, which will go to the $252 million terminal project. The new terminal is expected to open by 2024. Mobile is shifting its commercial airport from Mobile Regional Airport in west Mobile to the downtown location. The Alabama State Port Authority is getting $38 million. The grant is from the U.S. Department of Transportation Demonstration Program. The grant was financed through the fiscal year 2021 appropriations bill, and Mobile is the only recipient of the grant money.  (Source: Aviation Pros, 03/03/22)

New STEM program opens

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Fifth-graders from Brentwood Elementary School are in the inaugural class of the National Flight Academy's newest Department of Defense educational program, STARBASE Pensacola. STARBASE stands for Science Technology Academies Reinforcing Basic Aviation Space Exploration, and its purpose is to provide 25 hours of STEM education to fifth-grade students. Every fifth grader enrolled in the Escambia County School District will now participate in STARBASE, giving every fifth grader the chance to travel to the Navy base, meet base commanders and flight cadets and participate in hands-on activities meant to teach science, technology, engineering, and math. Students who attend the program will travel to NAS Pensacola for five, five-hour classes held once a week for five weeks out of the school year, said Rita Miller, director of STARBASE Pensacola. NAS Pensacola previously housed a similar program, called STARBASE Atlantis, that was shuttered in 2013 after the Navy withdrew funding.
