Temporary hangar ground broken
MILTON, Fla. - Santa Rosa County officials broke ground on a new hangar facility at Peter Prince Airport that will be the temporary home to Leonardo's maintenance operation. In April, county commissioners gave the go-ahead for design and engineering of the hangar, warehouse, and modular office complex. Construction on the new facility is expected to begin later this month. AgustaWestland Philadelphia Corp., a subsidiary of Italy's Leonardo (previously Finmeccanica), is under contract with the Navy to deliver and maintain up to 130 new training helicopters that will be used at Naval Air Station Whiting Field. When infrastructure funding from Triumph Gulf Coast becomes available, the company will become the first tenant of the new Whiting Aviation Park and construct a larger facility there. The interim hangar at Peter Prince Airport will then be used to incentivize other, similar companies to locate operations in Milton. Airport plan released
MOBILE, Ala. — A new $160 million, eight-gate terminal is the highlight of a master plan for the Mobile Downtown Airport. The Mobile Airport Authority said more than half its potential customers go to other states rather than using the current airport in west Mobile because of ticket prices and traffic congestion. The new plan might eliminate both issues. The 20-year plan calls for the eight jet bridge gates and a parking garage. Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said the $403 million investment over 20 years will be well worth it. After the new terminal is built, the Mobile Regional Airport would likely be utilized by the Coast Guard and some industrial and cargo flights. (Source: WPMI, AviationPros, 08/04/20)

SpaceX capsule lands in Gulf
PENSACOLA, Fla. - NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken returned home Sunday when their SpaceX capsule splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico south of Pensacola, Fla., at 2:48 CDT. It was the first time NASA astronauts have landed in the water since 1975, and the first ever in the Gulf of Mexico. The SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, called Endeavor, was hoisted aboard the deck of the company's "Go Navigator" recovery vessle. The splash down marked the completion of the first manned mission of NASA’s commercial crew program. Hurley and Behnken spent two months on the International Space Station after launching in late May from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., in the first crewed space launch from American soil since the end of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. The astronauts were slated to be taken by helicopter to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. (Source: GCAC, NPR, Washington Post, 08/02/20) Previous
